Lobgesang - Mendelssohn 2nd Symphony
Saturday 19 November 2011, 8:00pm
Trinity College Chapel
The Trinity Singers return for a storming performance of Mendelssohn's 2nd Symphony, for Soloists, Chorus and Orchestra. Described by Mendelssohn as a "Symphony-Cantata" this unique work was written for the 400th Anniversary of the Leipzig printing press and was performed in a celebratory concert at the St. Thomaskirche, Liepzig on 25th June, 1840. The texts originally chosen by Mendelssohn, are all drawn from the bible apart from the Lutherin chorale texts of "Nun Danket Alle Gott". Ironically written after the 4th symphony was composed, this later work of Mendelssohn displays his refined mastery for chorus and orchestral forces that is so present in his other great oratorios.
